Special Needs and Seniors
Lhasa Happy Homes believes that every abandoned, owner surrendered and/or shelter dog deserves a second chance at a wonderful life. This includes seniors who have been dumped because they have grown "too old," sick and/or injured dogs in the shelters who have been left to die...and the special needs pups who need extra TLC.

Vet bills are frequently very high. Lhasa Happy Homes never wants to be in a position where we cannot take a dog because we don't have the funding. Frequently, we dig into our own pockets to make sure the dogs we care for get the proper treatment...and sometimes, those pockets are pretty shallow.

Here are a few of our kids who could use your help. All donations are tax deductable.

Thank you for caring...the more you give, the more will live!

Lhasa Happy Homes wants to thank all those who supported Maddy during the 18 months of her life, especially her sponsors, Bev and Liz.

Thank you for loving Maddy...she was fortunate to have you. So are we.

MADELINE...a shining spirit
November, 2006 - April, 2008

Little Miss Madeline -- a sparkling spirit whose life on this planet was never to be a full one due to a terrible disease that plagued her from birth -- has succumbed to the perils of multiple liver shunts today, Saturday, April 26 at 9:30am. She was only 18 months old.

When we pulled Maddy from the shelter, we knew she was sick, but didn't know how sick. We had no idea how long her life would be. We thought she could have surgery and we could save her. LHH called upon one of our wonderful foster families, the Gleitman's, to care for her until after surgery. But it wasn't meant to be. We were horrified to learn that she was terminal and surgery was not in the cards. She would not live a long life...but she could still live a full life...thanks to love, devotion and commitment of this amazing foster family.

Maddy has had a wonderful 18 months with Gina, Margo, Sam and Steve...and her canine sisters, Ginger, Feta and Pansy. We promised ourselves when her quality of life was not full of joy and playfulness...we would not let her suffer. Today was that day.

Good-bye sweet princess....we shall see you again.

POPPEE.....is a little apricot, 4-5 month old Cockapoo puppy....who I saw at the Lancaster Shelter when I was picking up Meco. She seemed healthy and spry....and she was giving me a ton of kisses through the bars. I told the shelter if she needed my help, to let me know. When I got the call on Monday (Ap 21) that she had Parvo, my heart sank. That's what happens when you dump a puppy in the shelter without any shots...THEY GET SICK....and sometimes, the disease takes their lives. I tried to network her, as we don't have the facilities to house a parvo dog -- but nobody came to the rescue. Her sweet little spirit haunted me and there was no way I couldn't try to save her life. Parvo is not a death sentence unless it is left untreated. It is not nearly as debilitating as distemper. So, we got Poppee into emergency care and now she is at our regular vet and we are praying for her recovery. Dr. Hohne says her chances are very good....she has a strong spirit and it seems as though we caught it in time. We need your thoughts and prayers that Poppee will get through this...and her chances are excellent!! She will be in the hospital for the next two weeks...and we are hoping she will be available mid May. Thank you for your love, prayers and support.

This is MARLOWE. We received a call from the Orange County Shelter that he was brought in by his family to be euthanized because he had parvo. He is one year old. When asked if they ever vaccinated him, they "didn't know." This is why the spay neuter laws need to be enforced...because dogs die needlessly because of inane, uneducated backyard breeders. It is NOT FAIR that this dog could die because his owners didn't vaccinate him....and then to have him killed because they wouldn't spend the money to save his life? We saw his face and could not turn away. Please pray for Marlowe...and for Poppee (below)....and please help us support them. Parvo is a dreadful disease and we are spending whatever it takes to save them. The prognosis is good...we believe it was caught early....but it is a scary disease that does hold prisoners! Thank you for caring and for your contribution.

HILDA's life was not a happy one until she arrived at LHH. And still, she is adjusting. There is no question in our minds that this little puppymill product was bred and bred and bred. She was (and continues to be) fearful of the leash...we don't think she'd ever been walked. She is getting better but does have her moments. We agreed to take Hilda when another rescue group abandoned her at the vet because they did not want to pay her bill. She was pregnant and had a bladder stone. The vet aborted the puppies, removed the stone, but the rescue group refused to pay the bill. Hilda should never have been bred, as she has a huge overbite. But she has a sweetness about her that is precious and loving...after the fear dissipates. When she arrived at LHH, she would not walk on a leash. She is doing much better, Once she knows you won't her her, she clings to you with love and gratitude. She looks at you with her big brown eyes and you melt. Hilda is a little doll who needs TLC and love...lots of patience and affection. She is fine with other dogs, she just needs some time and love to be the best dog she can be. She will blossom before your eyes. A true rescue dog, there is nothing in the world like saving a life. Let Hilda tell you!!

HARRISON is a true, distinguished gentleman. It is sad to us when dogs mature and maybe lose their hearing or sight...they end up in the shelter. Harrison didn't deserve to be left behind just because he is blind. He is very healthy and in great shape...he just bumps into walls sometimes!!! It's hard to even know his "story" -- he is missing one eye and his other eye, from neglect, is dry and has a prolapsed (cherry) eyelid. Nevertheless...he is one handsome dude and we just couldn't let him languish in the shelter....no way!! He is a wonderful dog. He is smart and navigates his area quickly and finds the lay of the land! He loves to be with other dogs...he is not head shy, like many blind dogs...he's just a regular guy!! Harrison needs a loving, wonderful home to call his own. This boy will live a long life...being sight challenged is NOT A DEATH SENTENCE...and he deserves to be loved to pieces for the next 6-7 or more years!! Do you have a place in your heart for this handsome lad? Thank you for your support.

UPDATE: Wow...is this one lucky dog...and his new parents are lucky, too!! Gail and Brad have now adopted four, yes FOUR blind dogs from Lhasa Happy Homes...and I'm not sure who is luckier, them or Harrison. Let's call it a draw!! The best thing for us is we'll get to see this wonderful boy again...now that he has found his furever and ever home! I keep asking them to adopt me, but they say my legs aren't hairy enough!!! DOG BLESS THIS WONDERFUL FAMILY!!!!

This is YUKI...could be pronounced "yucky" because that is what he was when we pulled him out of the shelter. He was quiet, withdrawn and disconnected. We shaved him down and had him in foster care for a little while and he became very defensive and dominant...so off to training bootcamp he went. We are hoping that Yuki will graduate soon...but it is obvious to us that this adorable little man has had a very rough life. He was so matted when we got him, his eyes were glued shut (fortunately, did not incur any permanent damage). With love, attention to his training and a sense of security....Yuki will be a really good boy. He wants to please. He should go to a home without another dog, so that you can concentrate on him -- and him on you! Patience will be the key with this handsome lad.

GIBSON....is a playful little guy who came to LHH from the Lancaster Shelter with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. He looked like he had a perpetual smile on his face...and he is perpetually happy!! But, from the looks of him when we got him, life has not always been this way for him :( When we had his teeth cleaned, we asked that the vet look at his jaw....and take xrays....and sure enough, his jaw was fractured in two places. Apparently, he was either kicked or hit by a car -- but in either case, his owner didn't see fit to take him to a vet for treatment. So, trusted Dr. Olds did surgery and repaired his jaw and soon he will be good as new!! He is pretty swollen and a little uncomfortable right now, but it is only temporary. Gibson is probably only 2 yrs old...and he is loving and playful and a wonderful dog. Even though his surgery was costly, it was absolutely worth it. Check Gibson's profile under Available Dogs for more information about this happy fellow! Your contribution is appreciated.

Update: Well this is one lucky boy. His foster mom fell head over heels for that crooked smile of his and could not let him go. His jaw is healing, albeit not perfectly -- but perfect enough for him to get back to being a wild man...eating like a champ. Gibson is loving life with an all female house!! He has three sisters and foster friends who come and go...but not before being "Gibsonized." What a happy doggie!!!

POOBAH did not deserve the fate his owners had in store for him...so he is presently alive and well and living at Lhasa Happy Homes. Last October, they brought him to Petsmart to be groomed and he had a terrible accident....he got his right hind leg stuck in the cage and he freaked out! Consequently, he pulled his hip out of the socket and required surgery. His family chose not to have this done and instead, brought him to the shelter end of January to have him euthanized. Poobah is too grand a dog to leave this planet just yet. Despite his pain, he would follow you anywhere....up and down stairs and anywhere you are.....but it was obvious that he was not comfortable -- sometimes bearing weight and other times not. So, LHH took him in to have what is known as a FHO modified surgery and his leg will be in a sling until mid February. We are hopeful that he will be ready to go home by March 1!!! Once he has healed, he will fully recover and live a normal, active life!! Poobah is a phenomenal dog....good with everyone -- people, dogs, kids. He is grateful to be alive and shows it in everything he does. A winner.

BUSTER is a wonderful senior who needs a loving home to spend his golden years and a forever pillow to lay his head on. He is probably 10+...but often acts like a teenager!! He came from the shelter with a gastrointestinal infection, URI, fatty tumor and he needed to be neutered! Once all that was don, we learned he has a heart murmur and an underactive thyroid....all very easy to manage with inexpensive meds....and he is deaf :(( He has experienced a couple of seizures, which the vet does not feel require medication at this time....but for the most part, he is just happy being with you and seeing the sunshine and the birds every day. Buster is a really great little guy....who really needs a home!! Most of the costly tests have been done...now he is just a matter of maintenance and lots of love and affection (which is free!!). Thank you for contributing to his forever care.

This is REGIS....a very sweet little 6 month old Maltipoo/Shih Tzu mix who came from Lancaster Shelter. We went to get this boy on a Friday and they had forgotten to neuter him. We saw that he was in a horrible state and tried to get his neuter waived but they made him stay in the shelter over the holiday weekend...FIVE EXTRA DAYS suffering from sarcoptic mange because they "didn't have time to check him." This little angel was miserable...eyes were totally irritated and the mange was in full rage. Fortunately, mange is curable, hair grows back, and this little guy will be ready for adoption in a few weeks. We had to keep him in the hospital because this mange is very contagious to other dogs and people....and we had no place to put him :(( But, we could not let him suffer in the shelter. He is a sweetheart and we can't wait for him to be ready to go to his forever home!!

UPDATE: Regis is all healthy now and ready to go to his forever home. He has bonded with Monkee (As you can see from the second picture) and so we want them to go home together. These are two wonderful, young dogs who deserve a wonderful home and life. Could that be with you?

TANGO is a little 7 lb, 7 yr old Maltese, who came to us with his daughter, Sugah and "son-in-law" Peppa! His human mom became homeless and she was forced to give up all three dogs. Tango had some dental issues, so we got him a dental (and he lost a few teeth but still has plenty to chow down with!!) and he needed to be neutered, which was done....and was updated on all his shots. He was doing great until he tweaked his back one day and couldn't walk :(( We ran all sorts of tests, which all came back normal, thank Dog!! He had a few acupuncture treatments and voila....Tango is OK!!! He is going to need a home where he will get a lot of extra love and TLC and he won't be allowed to jump off the furniture and such to protect his back. His xrays show no damage, so we're hoping that he has no permanent issues....he is walking, playing and dances right into your heart if you let him!! He needs to be in a non-excitable home....where he can hang out, sit on your lap and give you lots of kisses. Tango really wants to go to his forever home....do you have room in your heart and home for this little sweetheart?

BARSTOW is a special little guy. The mere fact that this stunning, black and white, 16 lb, Lhasa/Tzu survived being dumped by his owner in the desert outside of Barstow is testimony itself that he is a tough little guy. He was found, totally dehydrated, wrapped in a tire tread!!! Gratefully, his rescue angels picked him up and brought him to us. But what we've just learned is that he had a bladder stone BIGGER than an extra large egg -- see for yourself (pic) . It is painful to even look at the size of this 2 oz stone that is jagged around the edges!!!!! This poor little baby has been suffering....but his suffering is over. His surgery was a success, he is recovering and will be better than new in no time. Barstow is a cuddle monkey -- he has excellent manners and will make a family a wonderful companion. Could you be that family?

UPDATE: Barstow has been adopted by the WONDERFUL Rossen family, who just love him to pieces. They hated the reminder that he was found in the desert right outside of "Barstow" so they renamed him Bowie! Mark, Mary and their son think they have hit the jackpot...and "Bowie" KNOWS that he has!! We thank all the loving adopters who take on our special needs dogs knowing and promising that their "bad times" are behind them. The next time Bowie sees a desert, it will have palm trees and a swimming pool...he will never be left there again!! We appreciate your contribution towards Barstow/Bowie's medical bills :)

RAMBO - is true to his name. He is voracious in all that he does....but he truly has the heart of a lover, not a fighter. Loves people and will kiss them until they are soaked! Loves to fetch and actually bring back the ball or toy or whatever you will play with him....and he is so fun to watch with a squeaky!!! Rambo is not so fond of dogs, which is why we decided he needed to go to Custom Dog Training for socialization and training. Our fear is that Rambo was living with, and probably attacked by, fighting dogs. He is strong and muscular at 20 lbs, but was matted to the bone, so dirty and infested with fleas and ticks when we took him out of the shelter. They had him listed as 7 yrs old and set to be euthanized....he's actually 1-2 yrs old and healthy!!! His mouth and eye look like he was attacked at one time, although the vet says he is fine. His tongue is long and is always "out" to greet a new friend! This is a fantastic dog and will be even moreso when he graduates from doggie bootcamp at Custom Dog Training (www.gotdogz.com) the first week of September. He will know 15 commands, be totally socialized, potty trained and comes with 5 private training sessions in your home with his adoption. He'll always be "Rambo" to us!!!

UPDATE: Rambo, now known as Beethoven, is happy and in his forever home!! He was adopted with Magee and they are living large in El Segundo with mom and dad and a wonderful park just across the street! Our sweet little guy got the training he needed...and guardians who will continue his training...and everyone is doing spectacular!! Thanks Debbie and Jim for having such a big heart....and keep up the training!!

LILIANA is a precious, chubby (!!) 4-5 year old Maltese Terrier Lhasa something mix (!!), who was adopted from the shelter and then returned because she has bum knees. That is no reason to dump her in the cold, dark shelter :((( Poor thing is 18 lbs and should be 12 lbs at max!! If we had to guess, we'd say that she belonged to a senior who never walked her and fed her too often and too much! Lili needs to lose a few pounds....but most importantly, she had to have surgery so that she can walk again and exercise!!

We took her to an orthopedic specialist, who informed us that the surgery for grade 4 bi-lateral patellar surgery is very complicated and expensive. We have confidence in our wonderful vet who always takes excellent care of our kids. While he is giving us a 30% discount, the tab is over $4,000 and has to be done in two separate (possibly three) surgical procedures. He says her prognosis is excellent and she will be able to walk...even run again!!This little girl deserves to be loved...she has the absolute sweetest personality and was giving us kisses, even though she was in a lot of pain. She will be available in July.

Thank you for your contribution, which will go directly to pay for Lili's surgery.

LILIANA still needs a forever home! She is all healed now and just needs to be walked regularly and LOVED ON OFTEN!!! She is a wonderful dog and she needs YOU!!!!

UPDATE ON LILIANA: Yipppeeee!! Liliana has found her forever home and she will be wrapped in love, good treats and lots of canine siblings for the holidays. Her foster mom, Deanna, decided there was no way Liliana was going anywhere (after 6 months of rehabilitation from her three surgeries)....and now Liliana is home for the holidays. Dog bless you one and all!!!

ARIEL is a little girl who had a very sad start in life. There is no question in our minds that she was not treated very well, from the way she looked when we pulled her from the shelter -- BALD AND SMELLY. Even more so, her behavior issues were of mistrust and extreme guarding and protection. She would cower and lunge, and bite... not certain if you were going to hit her or try to help her. She would guard everything as if she had never had anything of her own. Many dogs have this behavior -- especially Lhasa -- but Ariel's was extreme. She has been in K9 Boot Camp for several months now and she is highly trained, but her biggest motivation is food -- she really does not care about pleasing her person. She is good with the person who rescued her, but she still has difficulty trusting (and it is hard to trust her). When we think she is "there" she still surprises us. So, she may be a forever foster, as we do not believe she is dangerous, just a bit on the difficult side. She does have a warm and endearing side to her and she does love and give attention. Her training is costly, but very worth it. She could not "leave home without it." If Ariel is ever to leave LHH, she will need a mom/dad who will be consistent with her and love her to life, not spoil her to death. She is such a wonderful little girl....her training definitely is turning her into the princess she deserves to be. Thank you for your contribution, which will help pay for Ariel's training.

UPDATE: After 16 months of being with Lhasa Happy Homes....8 months in bootcamp, under the direction of Charlotte Bell and her happy dog trainers....ARIEL HAS FINALLY BLOSSOMED and become a happy dog! She is even happier now that the Morris Family has adopted her!!! She is part of their family and the neighborhood...and everyone loves her. She is smiling and dancing and eating (her favorite thing). We are so happy....sooooooo happy. A new beginning and a happy one for Ariel! YIPPPEE
